Introduction to Hazard Communication Training

Hazard Communication Training is part of Occupational Health and Safety Administration OSHA Training that is required for the welfare and protection of employees. Butterfly  Training offers multiple OSHA Employee Training Courses. 

Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 “To assure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women; by authorizing enforcement of the standards developed under the Act; by assisting and encouraging the States in their efforts to assure safe and healthful working conditions; by providing for research, information, education, and training in the field of occupational safety and health.

Trainees will gain knowledge about the risks involved in each area of focus and demonstrate ways to reduce risks to themselves and fellow employees.

Hazard Communication Training

Occupational Safety and Health Training – Hazard Communication

There are five basic elements included in Hazard Communication Training. These are chemical inventories: chemical labeling, Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), written plans, and employee training requirements. The Hazard Communication Training also covers the five main classes of physical hazards: Explosive, Flammable, Oxidising, Gases under Pressure, and Corrosives. 

Employees must have Hazard Communication Training (HAZCOM) on the chemicals they may encounter at the time of initial assignment, whenever a new hazard is introduced into the workplace, and when employees may be exposed to other employers’ workplace chemical hazards. 

The content of this training is based on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements for Hazard Communication described in the 29 CFR 1910.1200 (Code of Federal Regulations) and on the Flight Standards Service Chemical Safety and Hazard Communication Program, Order 3900.78, written by the FAA.

Who is required to receive Hazard Communication Training?

Most companies must be OSHA-compliant and train their staff on important safety requirements for workplace safety. However, not all businesses must follow OSHA. Exempt organizations do not have OSHA training requirements. The link above will detail the small number of organizations and or situations where OSHA Training is not required.
